Six Packing Tips to Make Moving Day with Kids
Stress-Free...

Author: Damon Adkins

Involving children in the moving process can reduce a stressful situation by keeping them occupied while teaching them the value of hard work. A well-prepared plan with the childrens' needs in mind will help create a smooth transition.

Here are some packing tips designed to make for an efficient moving day...

Let the Children in on the Fun

Have the kids help organize boxes to pack, and reward them for putting their toys, clothes and other items in boxes. Let them choose which healthy snacks to enjoy on the trip. Allowing them to have a hand in the journey is a good way to keep them busy and happy.

Make Crucial Decisions Early

Sorting, selling or tossing should be done early to help maximize space in your moving vehicle. If home living extends to self storage, that will be a point of emphasis. You may need to look into self storage near your new home. If you need to eliminate the kids’ stuff, do it early to avoid moving-day meltdowns.

The Moving Day Kit

Have the kids make their own moving-day box for items such as games, books, movies and other personal possessions. They are actually helping while learning a little bit about moving and organizing. Once organized, these items can be accessed easily if the children are looking for something to do during the drive.

The Assistant

Organization is the key to a trouble free moving day. While making lists and checking them twice, why not let your kids in on the fun? Your children might enjoy being the assistant. It could give them an important, simple role when it's time to pack.

Avoid Boredom

The children may get bored when it’s packing time, but letting them help with other activities can be a great thing. Consider putting someone in charge of other items, such as music for the trip. Always remember to bring the headphones.

Plan everything

Preparation is the key to keeping your children happy while moving. If you have a lot of traveling to do to reach your new home, consider the amount of time it will take to get there in order to prepare pit stops. Having backup plans helps deal with unexpected or even expected situations. Make sure you bring the kids' favorite toys on the way and keep the other favorites in an easily accessible box.
